Trauma Reduced

This scenario unfolded today in the comfort of our own home.

"EeeeeeeaaaaEEEAaaaaaahhhhEEAAAAAAHHH! "
(This is how you spell a scream that begins in another room and continues on into the room you occupy)

Me: "Whatever is the matter with you?"

Girl: (crying and sniffling) "I was in the... in the... out in the... and then... I came...(sniffle, sniff)... and went into the other place... where the thing was...and...and..."

Me: "Are you hurt?"

Girl:  (Crying...sniffling...whimpering)  "Just...just...um...let me show you...."

As she pathetically limps across the room to drag a stool over next to where I am sitting, I quietly access the situation.  However, I let her continue hoping for perhaps a teachable moment or at least some humor.

Girl: "Now...just look at what happened to my knee" (lifting the wounded leg up onto the stool)

It looks normal.

Me: "...and how was it that you hurt your knee, again?"

Girl: "Well, I was out in the play room, and then I saw the ball outside and then I got out of my seat and went to the window and the chair was by the door and the table, and then I told Titus, and he said I should be quiet, and so then I went out and the thing was there and it..."

Me: "So, you bonked your knee?"

Girl: "yep"

And she promptly popped up off the chair and went off to play.

Now, as she's off to play again in the backyard, I wonder.  When did she make the decision to overcome her trauma?  Was it entirely fake, or maybe she felt bad at first and then as she thought about it she realized it wasn't that bad?  OR did she just need to share her traumatic incident with me in order to feel better?  I often find myself being less compassionate than I should with regards to the "owies of life".  I take the "you'll be all right" approach.  Generally, its true.  However, how many times do I do the same thing? God allows the same to us through prayer, so why shouldn't I extend the same to my children? I blather on about some major "thing" that is traumatizing my life and then just after talking about it, I feel better.  While this situation was very humorous, it also served as a reminder to me that I should not be so quick to shush those "owies of life" away.
