And so I ask myself...

WHY does this keep happening to me?
Am I an irresponsible parent?
Is this just my lurch in life?
Will I EVER be able to leave any INK unsupervised in my home? EVER?
Shouldn't I have discovered a new way to remove ink and scored a huge money making patent on it by now?

This is the sight that greeted me in the afternoon. "Hi Mama!", she says as she comes walking into the room after her afternoon "nap".
I knew she had been sleeping, I saw her! Obviously she was quite busy after she woke up.
Sophia and I both searched the room for signs of markers or ink. None. None in the bedroom, the bathroom, the boy's room, or the guest room. None on the walls or carpet (excuse me as I pause for a moment of thankful prayer)
How could she have done this??
Of course, asking her was not a fruitful effort either... "Emily, how did you get this on you?" and her brilliant 2 year old answer.... "because". Duh, I'm the one who asked her, the 2 year old for an explanation.
My next question was was carefully and skillfully crafted to trap her,
"Emily, what were you doing upstairs ?"
but alas, she's smart.
She gave the perfectly crafted answer.
"Sleeping, Mama....I napping!"
After this, I gave up and just went upstairs to try and figure it out myself.
Finally, after straightening the bed and folding blankets, I found the culprits medium of choice.
Sophia's Littlest Pet Shop Mini Key chain Stamp Set. It contains two ink pads that are no bigger than, well, no bigger than Emily's fingertips!! And thus, the mystery was solved. Except for the mystery about how to get the ink off of her fingers and hands. Mind you, there were several coats. Now, about 4 days later, her little fingernails are still dyed blue, but it has all faded off of her hands.
Just in case you were wondering...the toy was not left out in plain sight, but was tucked away in a "safe" (or so she thought) location. It was safe from the casual eye search for trouble, but not from the careful investigation of a mischievous 2 year old sister who has a bent towards ink!

  2. I have a very....creative two-year old as well. And a developmentally delayed three-year old (think big, strong, startlingly destructive one-year old). So here are my two favorite skin cleaners:

    1. Olive oil.
    2. If that doesn't work, rubbing alcohol.

I have a friend who says fingernail polish remover and bleach (uh, one or the other, not together) also work, especially on the nails. I have been too scared to use them on that sensitive kid skin though.

  3. Jamie...Thanks for the cleaning suggestions! I'm sure I'll have ample opportunity to try them out. Even though, at this point, I've put all ink related items into safe keeping. Ha! That is, until she figures out how to scale a wall and reach the high cupboards!

  4. I've had pretty good luck with rubbing alcohol, although not so much on skin like that! It does work well with regular ball point pen ink. One my husband learned at work is for removing permanent ink, like sharpie ink. You take a dry erase marker and color over the permanent marker. It "reactivates" the ink or something, and it comes off! Hopefully, neither of us will ever have to try it!!
