The Flu Blessing

After I survived the birthday party, which I never posted about, we got to take our turn with "The Flu". I won't go into details, (you're welcome) but it was a bad time. I even got to take my turn! (insert fake enthusiasm here) It was such a blessing.

Actually, I did receive a blessing during these past few days. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful daughter. Sophia, is 9 this year, and that, to me, is still pretty young. However, these past few days she put many a teenager to shame. She is an amazing big sister! She took it upon herself to let me sleep late and took care of getting breakfast for Emily and Titus. (Ethan and Caleb were also down with the flu at the time) She washed them off and then took them to play in the family room, with the doors closed so that I wouldn't be disturbed. All through the day, that's how it was...she saw a need and filled it, with a joyful spirit! She was so glad to do it! It was such a blessing to my heart to know that she was happy to take care of her brother and sister, she actually wanted to do it! It's always been my desire that the Lord would help me to train her up as a young woman who would want to serve others, especially her family. Not mechanically as some sort of "Yes, Master" kind of duty, but just as a loving sister/friend. I can't say that I've done lots of formal lessons on child care and serving others, but I try to make the most of life's examples as she's with me throughout the day. This has brought me to wonder if she would be the same girl if she were off to school for 6 or 7 hours each day? How could I ever make up for the loss of those hours with her? All totaled that's over 1 day each week that I lose the ability to train and influence my daughter! Okay, now I'm shocked! 5 days a week X 7 hours a day = 35 hours! That's a lot of time! Realistically, I can't think of a way that I could make up for it. Oh, I know that wonderful girls come from families that send their children to school, I know homeschooling is not the only way. But, it has made me so thankful (again) for the opportunity to school the children at home.

What a great life! One day we're home together being sick and being pampered and taken care of by a wonderful 9 year old ....and the next day we're home together learning about Cyrus McCormick, Geographical points of interest in Canada, Special blend sounds and why we must remember them, and the color of bumblebee's ! How often can people say that they've been blessed by a 9 year old, and mean it?!

*Note: The picture above is older, but its a favorite one of Sophia's from when Emily was a baby.

  1. What a sweet post about Sophia... so sorry you had the flu! I hate being sick, but I hate repiratory infections the most, they hit me the hardest.

That was pretty shocking when you added up the hours lost of training!! Wow. Priase God we have the ability to homeschool. I so love my 9 year old too... my home couldn't run without him. No, seriously. I coundn't get a thing done without his ever-vigilant watching eye, helping me babysit while I shower, or whatever. Oh... Dan beckons me, I have to go. Later!!
