Have You Ever Seen an Albino Squirrel??
I hadn't seen them, but I had heard about them. This summer when we went to Niagara Falls, we saw a black squirrel running around. However, last week as we were looking out in the back yard I saw a streak of white buzz by the back fence. At first, I figured it was just a wicked neighborhood cat coming through the yard
, but as it came through the yard again I realized that it was an Albino squirrel. We normally have a few grey squirrels that come around and run around in the yard, climb the trees, etc. Now that this Albino squirrel has come around they're acting kind of angry. Several times I've caught him chasing the grey squirrels up a tree or out of the yard. It seems that the new squirrel on the block is claiming his turf!
I was curious to see if there was any interesting info on the Albino Squirrel, so I did a search on the web and found The Albino Squirrel Preservation Society (ASPS), they are an international collegiate organization dedicated to "fostering compassion and goodwill" toward albino squirrel. I just had to laugh about that! Compassion and goodwill towards squirrels?? Surely it's not a real thing! Strangely enough, it is a real thing. On their website its also says this... "Club activities include pro-squirrel rallies, camp outs, and t-shirt sales" What I want to know is if the squirrels attend the camp outs and wear the t-shirts, do they carry signs at the rallies?? The subtitle on their web page is "The Albino Squirrel Preservation Society...In the constant pursuit of albino squirrel rights.".jpg)
Who knew squirrels even needed rights?!
I did look it up on Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia and they even mention that "White squirrels are also commonly seen in Dayton, Ohio and on the campus of Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio "
There is a difference between a White Squirrel and an Albino Squirrel. A white squirrel is mostly white, but has dark eyes, while the albino will be all white and have pink/red eyes. They look kind of creepy up close, but from inside my house looking out my window, they're fine.
It was fun to see the Albino Squirrel romping around in the snow. There were several times when it was very hard to see it. Ethan thought that was cool... all natural camo. Cool.
