Today...

I made an appointment with Dayton Head & Neck Surgeons. That probably isn't what you expected to read about when you came to read this blog. Well, believe me, its not really what I want to be writing about either. Often times I can't decide what to write because there's too many things. People are always telling me, "Just write about what's going on in your life."
Well, this is what's going on in my life.

Everyone is born with a precious little thing called a "Thyroid". Shortly after having Sophia, I was tested for an abnormal thyroid because my doctor felt it was inflamed. The tests came back normal and life went on as usual. Three years ago, while at the doctor for shingles, they found a growth on my thyroid. I was sent to an endocrinologist and had a fine needle biopsy done. That was NOT a fun experience. It was found that I did have several tumors that are attached to my thyroid, but they were non cancerous and not large enough to be a problem. A lot can change in three years. This past April, I was seen again for my enlarged thyroid with several blood tests and an ultrasound that can check for the presence of cancer in the cells. Praise the Lord, the tests came back saying that even though there were several tumors, the largest being 4 cm, that there was still no cause to really "do" anything because the thyroid is still producing, it is just making too much hormone. Now, 6 months later, the tumors have grown large enough that they are impeding my swallowing and can be recognized by someone who looks at my neck. Don't worry, its not like those African ladies you see with those huge Goiters. A Goiter is due to a deficiency, not an excess as I have. Sometimes I feel like its that obvious, but its really not.

The next step is to have my thyroid removed and that is why I'll be seeing the surgeon in a couple of weeks. I don't really know how soon it will be or any signifigant details about that part of it.

Many of you who may read this don't even really know me other than from what you've read here or heard of from a friend. Nevertheless, I would appreciate your prayers for this situation and my family as we go through this "procedure" together.

It is our prayer that I would be able to have the surgery done around the holidays (strange as that may seem), so that it would be convenient for my parents to come here and help out with things as I get myself back to "normal". We have a wonderful church family who has and will come along side when we need them to (and even when we don't think we need them to). God's family is such a blessing to be a part of, especially in the absence of our blood relatives.

Sorry that I didn't have anything witty or entertaining to tell you tonight, but I did as the masses have requested.

Just tellin' it like it is.

  1. WOW!! I had no idea. Have you been losing weight? Or is that the opposite? My mother has also had her thyroid removed, and Mrs. Goetsch has had hers removed due to thyroid cancer... you may want to post a comment on her blog asking her to read this post and tell you about her experience. I know that you do not have cancer, but she has been through this surgery and knows a LOT about this whole part of the body. We will pray!! Thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi. I am a friend of Jenny's. I had half of my thyroid removed.....a few years ago. I also had non-cancerous nodules...but they were only in the right side. The surgery in itself was not all that bad......I stayed in the hospital overnight and was home that next day. My surgery was in the morning....and for dinner in the hospital..I was eating as normal...with just slight soreness. Jenny has my email...you are welcome to email me if you want more in depth details of what you can expect. Will be praying for you for sure.
