ARE YOU CRAZY?! Yes, we are, thank you.
On a normal day I can walk into any store and get looks from people as they see me, the mother of FOUR children! They wonder...Are those all hers? Don't they know what causes that? I actually love it when that happens.
Next comes the fun of seeing those same people repeatedly throughout the store. Usually the children and I are having some sort of quiet conversation or they are helping me look for the items we are shopping for, and my favorite is when Caleb and Sophia are comparison shopping and commenting about "Well, that's sure a BAD price!" or "Why would anyone want to buy blue yogurt, that's sick!" Anyway... It's so fun to have a nice time in the store with my FOUR children and listen to the ONE spoiled rotten Wal-Mart brat screaming its whole head off at the other end of the store. After that happens people are so funny. Now they look at the kids and wonder "How does she get them to behave like that?" or "Are those kids always that good?" or sometimes they'll walk by and say "You have such a nice family." I smile and say "Thank you, God has been good to us" and sometimes Ethan will say thank you also.
So, I said all of that to tell you about our trip to the Zoo...We were able to have the oldest two Fehlen boys come and stay with us while their younger brother had his tonsils removed. Brian also had the day off so we decided to take us all on a little adventure. We left at 9 am the next morning and headed out to the Columbus Zoo! It's only a short drive, a little less than 1 1/2 hrs. We got there just in time to see more school buses lined up in the parking lot than any other vehicle. Great. The one day that we decide to come to the zoo was also the same day that 47,000 school buses dropped off every public school child from here to Boston! Okay, well, there weren't that many, but it seemed like a lot, especially when we weren't expecting to see any!As it turned out, the schools that were there had things really under control, even the kids.
All the schools had on special colored shirts for their groups and then they were all in small groups of 8 or so kids with an adult. They must have all gone the opposite way that we did because we didn't have to wade through them to see the animals at all. I think they must have left around lunch time because we didn't see them at all in the afternoon.
Praise the Lord that worked out in our favor!Even though we were there with people who had children and groups of school children, you should've seen the looks we got as we toured around the zoo with 6 children! The 3 older boys look so close in age that I'm sure it puzzled many people. It was quite funny. I actually heard one lady say to her husband...
"Can you believe that someone so small could have allll those children?!" Ha! How silly people are! It wasn't that long ago that people had families with 10,12, 14 and more children!
All of that aside, we had a great time. We got to see so many animals and got lots of excercise walking all around the zoo. We also rode the train and the boat ride, and the kids rode horses and ponies. After we were done at the zoo we concluded our trip with dinner at.... Can you guess? Of course, we ate at Chick-fil-a!

Have you ever heard of the book, "The Family that nobody wanted"? We just finished it, and it talks about them going to the zoo at the end. So Anna has been talking about going to the zoo, too. Glad you had fun and can be a good example.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it INSANE how people think that three or four children is a lot?? I can't wait to see their looks and receive their comments if the Lord chooses to bless us a few more times. Even more fun is to go out with my Pastor's wife with her eight. All of them behaving themselves...people think it's a school outing. It has only been in the last 50-100 years that we've taken that control away from God, as you said, people used to bear far more children, and live to be 95!! So very very silly the general public is in 2006. Hee hee. I'll be watching my friend's three for almost 3 weeks in July, so I'll get to have 6 for awhile! I'm excited!
